Edible Seashore

Module A: Duration - approximately 4 hours. Participants are introduced to the identification and collection of coastal plants, fish and shellfish, which have been eaten by native cultures for thousands of years. Departures are set to maximize tide cycles.  Field time is approximately 3 - 4 hours.

Module B: Processing - participants are introduced to the basics of dehydration, pressure canning, hot water bath and hot smoke preservation. You will take home samples of your efforts.  Safety considerations are introduced at all levels.  3 - 4 hours

A Recommended reading list is provided.  A salt water fishing licence (basic no salmon tag) is required for any shellfish collection. Dress for the weather: close toed boots recommended, leather or rubberized gloves.

Edible Forest

In times of floods, drought or on a daily basis, it is Elder's knowledge, which has saved village populations from starvation. Most people today have little or no idea about gathering food from the natural world.
 
Module A: Duration: approximately 4 hours. Participants, are introduced to the identification and collection of coastal forest shoots, leaves, berries, mushrooms and nuts. Samples collected will vary with the seasons.  Field time is approximately 3 - 4 hours.   Dress for the weather: close toed boots, leather or rubberized gloves, small knife recommended.
 
Module B: Processing - participants are introduced to the basics of dehydration, juicing, jam making. You will take home samples of your efforts.  Safety considerations is emphasize at all levels.  3 hours

Module B: Edible Forest - participants are introduced to spring shoots, leaves, summer berries, fall mushrooms which have been harvested by native peoples for thousands of years. Time: 3 – 4 hours.

Collected specimens will vary through the seasons: Spring to Fall
