Canoeing on Quadra Island
One of Quadra Islands surprises is the number of freshwater lakes found all over the island. Word has it Quadra has the largest freshwater lake system of all the islands off the west coast except Vancouver Island (which is fifteen times longer!).
Main Lake Provincial Park protects a chain of lakes, marshes, and creeks surrounded by mature rainforest. A wonderful, easy weekend canoe trip explores Village Bay Lake, Mine Lake and Main Lake with camp sites and basic facilities dotted around the lake shore.
More strenuous trips can include some ocean paddling and portages between the lakes and marine channels. One trip possibility is using the portage trail between Main Lake and Yeatman Bay. There is also a portage trail between the Octopus Islands and Wiatt Bay across to Small Inlet and Granite Bay.
Canoers and all boaters need to be aware and knowledgeable in understanding and navigating tidal currents. The channels around Quadra Island can have extremely fast and turbulent water especially at times of large tidal exchange. Consult tide and current tables before planning your trip and ensure you are prepared for local water and weather conditions.
